Dental implants, implant dentures and implant bridges are a long lasting replacement option for failing or missing teeth. Dental implants replace the root of a missing tooth. They are made from titanium a biocompatible material that is placed into the jawbone. Once the titanium post has fully integrated with the bone it can support one or more dental restorations. Dental implants have a success rate of 96 percent, dental implants are a great long lasting solution to missing teeth. With proper care and maintenance, your dental implant can last a lifetime.
First an assessment is made by the doctor to make sure you are a good candidate for dental implants. Candidates for dental implants need to have sufficient bone density in the jaw to support the implant. If you suffer from bone loss that does not necessarily exclude you as an implant candidate. The doctor may have you take a 3-D scan of the area to make sure you have enough bone to support a dental implant.
The day the dental implant is placed if you still have a tooth in the area it will need to be extracted to allow for placement of the dental implant. A bone graft material and the titanium post will be placed allowing it to anchor to the jaw. A healing cap is placed over the post while the tissue heals around it. It takes four to six months until the implant is fully integrated with the bone. Once this happens then it can serve as a new tooth root to support the final dental restoration.
