Periodontal Disease: The invisible epidemic
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease or periodontitis, is one of the most common maladies in the history of mankind. Unlike most other diseases, periodontal disease is typically not painful or symptomatic until its later stages. It’s caused by the buildup of harmful bacteria or plaque at or below the gum line. If left untreated, periodontal disease progresses in a subtle, insidious way. Its harmful effects include swelling and bleeding of the gums, looseness of teeth and ultimately, tooth loss.
Our future blogs on periodontal disease will discuss diagnosis, periodontal disease classification, treatments, prevention and the link between gum disease and other diseases including COVID-19. In closing, ignore your teeth and they’ll go away!
